The Find Magazine
The Find Magazine anunció su cierre después de 13 años compartiendo cultura musical desde los Países Bajos. Esta humilde publicación me dio la oportunidad de participar en diversos proyectos y ganar experiencia como profesional así que bien merece unas palabras de despedida por mi parte.
The Find Magazine called it a wrap after 13 years sharing culture and music, straight from The Netherlands. This more-than-a-magazine gave me the chance to grow and gain professional experience by having me in different projects and I believe it deserves some proper good-bye words from my end.
Estamos a mitad de los 2000, los blogs sin grandes pretensiones ni estrategias publicitarias dominan la red y las piratería amenaza una industria que no estaba preparada para un cambio tecnológico y de hábitos de consumo.
Por aquel entonces yo era toda una digger virtual visitando diariamente decenas de páginas sobre música (incluyendo blogs rusos y japoneses con enlaces que valían oro, o que podían darte alguna que otra sorpresita).
We are in the mid-2000s era, mindless and random personal blogs are the trend on the Internet and piracy is the new favorite word of a music industry caught off-guard when it comes to technology and new user habits.
Back then I was a ‘digital digger’, browsing tens of music websites on daily basis – including Japanese and Russian blogs with hard to find jewels and risky links.
Y saltando de web en web acabé en un blog (‘MS’ para los amigos) que se convirtió en mi fuente favorita de música, descubriéndome artistas y géneros que sigo escuchando a día de hoy. Unos añitos después, en una red social que te recomendaba usuarios según gustos musicales coincidí con algunos miembros activos del blog.
Por aquel entonces estaba empezando a dibujar de forma más o menos habitual y alguien se fijó en algunas ilustraciones que había compartido.
So jumping from site to site I ended up on this blog (‘MS’ for the real OG’s) which became my favorite source for music, allowing me to discover artists and genres I still dig and recommend today. A few years later, I found some of the members from the blog at this new social network recommending people based on their music taste.
Drawing was just starting to become a habit for me and someone spotted the works I was sharing by then.
Resulta que, paralelamente al blog, mi futuro jefe holandés (llamémosle Danny) estaba trabajando en su nuevo proyecto: una revista y web de música de corte similar. Ajá: The Find. Y así llegó mi primer encargo oficial, un retrato de The GasLamp Killer (Brainfeeder) para el primer número de la edición impresa.
Turns out besides the blog, my future Dutch boss (hello Danny, that’s you) was also working on a new project: a printed and digital publication related (but not limited) to the same music vibes: The Find. And that’s how I got my first commission and published work, a portrait of The GasLamp Killer (Brainfeeder) for the first printed issue.
Al poquito tiempo el blog cerró aunque el contacto entre los miembros se mantuvo y algunos llegaron a ser editores de la revista.
En cuanto a mí, realicé varias portadas para lanzamientos de productores de distintos rincones del mundo e incluso llegué a escribir en la web sobre música, diseño, graffiti y arte urbano – me quedo especialmente con la publicación sobre el pixaçao y la artista Hyuro; y también participé con mi propia selección temática de soul y funk para algún que otro mix (1, 2 y 3 para ser exactos).
A bit after the blog was shut down although the connection between some of the active members was kept alive and some ended up working as editors for the magazine.
I got the chance to design and illustrate the cover artworks for music producers from all over the world and I wrote some pieces for the webiste about music, design, graffiti and urban art – if I have to choose, the ones about pixaçao and the artist Hyuro might be my favorites. I also co-created a couple of funky and soul playlists I still enjoy today (1, 2 and 3) 🙂
El mundo editorial no es fácil, sacar adelante una revista de música menos, y The Find se centró más en el medio digital convirtiéndose en también en una plataforma de promoción para músicos.
Y así llegó – entre otros proyectos también en formato físico – Jazzvolution, 3 recopilatorios en vinilo con productores de todo el mundo, con nombres de la talla de Shin-Ski, Propo’88, L’Orange o Amerigo Gazaway.
Esto último pudo ser la semilla que dio lugar a Rucksack Records.
The publishing world ain’t easy – especially the printed one – so The Find put its focus on being a digital medium while becoming a platform for musicians; that’s more than just your music news provider.
And that’s how Jazzvolution – a trilogy on vinyl with jazzy sounds by international producers such as Shin-Ski, Propo’88, L’Orange or Amerigo Gazaway – came to life among other physical projects.
Fair to say this is what opened the path for Rucksack Records.
En algún punto en la línea temporal de todo esto, Danny y yo llegamos a conocernos en persona en Ámsterdam. Era una tarde lluviosa, comimos mucho y hablamos de futuros planes – como todavía hacemos de vez en cuando. The beat goes on.
Somehow, in the middle of all of this, Danny and I finally met in person in Amsterdam. It was a rainy afternoon, we ate a lot and talked about future plans – just like we still do every now and then. The beat goes on.
